Upwork fee calculator

Freelance contracts. The fee is set per contract, 0–15%.

Upwork no longer charges one flat rate. Since it retired the old sliding scale, the Freelancer Service Fee is set per contract anywhere from 0% to 15%, and it is locked the moment a proposal or offer is sent — it cannot change mid-contract. You are shown the exact percentage before you bid, so pick yours below rather than guessing. Most published examples use 10%.

What this calculator does not cover

  • The fee is set per contract by Upwork across a published 0–15% range; the choices above are reference points, not tiers Upwork publishes. Use the figure shown on your own offer or contract.
  • Refunds return the fee: if money is refunded to your client, Upwork refunds the service fee charged on that amount, so you are not paying a fee on money you did not keep.
  • Client-side charges are separate and are not deducted here — they change what your client pays, never what you receive.
  • Connects (used to submit proposals), membership plans and withdrawal or currency-conversion costs are all separate and not modelled.

Upwork fees: common questions

How much does Upwork take from a $50 sale?

$5.00 on a $50 sale, leaving you $45.00 — an effective rate of 10%. On $100 it is $10.00, leaving $90.00. The rate differs between the two because Upwork charges a fixed amount per transaction as well as a percentage, so the flat part weighs more heavily on smaller orders.

What are Upwork's fees, exactly?

On a $50 sale, Upwork charges freelancer service fee of $5.00 (10% of $50.00). That comes to $5.00 in total. There is no monthly fee.

Does Upwork charge fees on shipping?

Yes. Upwork calculates its percentage on the order total, which includes the shipping you charged the buyer. A $50 item with free shipping costs $5.00 in fees; the same item with $10 shipping costs $6.00 — $1.00 more, on shipping money that mostly goes to the carrier. Raising your shipping price raises your Upwork bill.

What should I charge on Upwork to keep $50?

Work it backwards rather than guessing: at Upwork's rates you have to charge more than $50 to keep $50, because the fee is taken from what the buyer pays. The what-to-charge calculator solves for the exact price, including the flat per-transaction fee, and rounds up to the cent so you are never left short.

What does this Upwork calculator not include?

The fee is set per contract by Upwork across a published 0–15% range; the choices above are reference points, not tiers Upwork publishes. Use the figure shown on your own offer or contract.

Are these Upwork fees up to date?

They were read from Upwork's own published fee schedule on September 3, 2026, and the source is linked on this page so you can check it yourself. An automated check re-reads every source page weekly and flags any that have changed. Fee schedules do move without notice, so where this page and Upwork disagree, Upwork is right.

That is what Upwork takes. What the unit actually earns is another question again, once shipping, advertising and the orders that come back are in the picture — work out the true margin.

There is no account, no email wall and nothing for sale here, which is deliberate — it is what lets the site publish what platforms actually charge and link to where each rate came from. Re-reading ten fee schedules every week is the unglamorous part, and it is what keeps the numbers worth trusting. If that saved you a bad listing decision, you are welcome to put a little toward the domain and the hosting. If it did not, please do not.
